The Story of Our Changes - Our KAIZEN Story
In 2001, ISOWA celebrated the 80th Anniversary of the founding of the company. Within the company during that time, the workforce was dominated by robot-like employees who thought things like, "I shouldn't say a word," "I should keep out of other people's work," and "I just have to put up with doing my job" and who did the work they were given in just the way they were told to do it, things that were the exact opposite of the principles for action set up by the company. Under those circumstances, on October 7th of that year, an 80th Anniversary Memorial Lecture was given that became a huge source of motivation in the reformation of our company after that.
Before, the assembly plant was a bit gloomy, as can be seen in the photo on the left. We took changing the type of lighting equipment to something brighter as an opportunity to repaint all the floors and walls in the plant with a brighter color of paint. These activities were referred to as "Operation: Whitening." Once finished, the assembly plant became so much brighter that it didn't even seem like the same place. After the plant became brighter, it became really obvious that some areas weren't organized very well or that some floors were dirty. The plant became cleaner and cleaner due to it being so much brighter. All these ideas came from the opinions of people working in the plant, and the employees on-site themselves decided to act and bring it all into realization. Painting was done by employees on the weekend. Those employees gradually gained more and more confidence in their own abilities in being able to improve conditions at their own workplace.
